The University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer (Hochschule Emden/Leer) was founded in 1973 in the East-Frisian cities of Emden and Leer as “Fachhochschule Ostfriesland”. After a merger with other regional universities in 2000, it became part of the “University of Applied Sciences Oldenburg/ Ostfriesland/ Wilhelmshaven”, but was re-founded as the “University of Applied Sciences Emden/ Leer” in 2009. The University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer offers a range of innovative and practically oriented courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. HSEL will be responsible for the development of the CT blended apprenticeships curricula due to its previous experience of developing e-learning platforms for online learning in the field of STEM education and training.
STAFF
Prof. Mäkiö studied computer sciences from the FernUni Hagen and received his doctoral degree from the faculty of economics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 2006. From 2006 to 2010, he was department manager of the software engineering department at the Research Centre of Information Technology at the University of Karlsruhe (FZI). From 2010 till 2012, he worked as a temporary professor at the University Heilbronn. From 2012 to 2013, he worked as a lecturer in TTC in Riadh, KSA. In 2013, he joined the Faculty of Technology, University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer as a full professor of Computer Programming.
Prof. Mäkiö has the “Baden-Württemberg-Zertifikat für Hochschuldidaktik” – a didactic certification for university teaching staff and he is the coordinator of the Erasmus+-Project MaCICT – (Modernisation of Master Curriculum in ICT for Enhancing Student Employability).
Elena Mäkiö is a part-time PhD student at the University of Warwick. Her research focuses on holistic educational approaches for teaching of cyber-physical systems engineering. She is an Associate Fellow at Higher Education Academy, UK. She studied applied mathematics and worked as a software engineer of distributed safety critical systems. She is currently working in IT financing and controlling at a large ship manufacturer.
